Burlesque Foundations: A Course For The Aspiring Performer (July/Aug session)
Do you want to be a burlesque performer? Longing to get on the stage, but not quite sure how to get started? This course will help get you on your way as you learn to bump, grind, shimmy, shake, and strut your way across the burlesque stage while exploring a variety of peels and reveals to tease and please an audience. It takes more than just the moves to get going on your burlesque journey, so this class also covers the logistics of being a burlesque performer including choosing a stage name, writing a performer bio, how to get involved in the burlesque community in RVA, applying to shows, makeup and costume basics, pastie making and tassel twirling, act building, and more! Over this 8 week course, students will be learning a group act and each individual will have the opportunity to create and perform a solo in a student showcase on Friday, September 13thth at Strangeways Brewing in Richmond.
Wear comfortable clothes that you can move in. As you develop your act and acquire the costume pieces you will need for it, bring those to class! Pastie making materials will be provided. Masks suggested!
**PLEASE NOTE: This class requires a lot of work outside of class! You will be developing your own solo choreography and costume and will need to practice the assigned group choreography on your own. You will also need to acquire all of your own costume pieces. Burlesque Foundations is intended for students with a goal to perform on stage in front of an audience. If that's not something you're interested in, check out some of the choreography classes instead!**
